As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Emma Stone was rumored to be in talks to make her Broadway debut in the upcoming revival of CABARET in the role of Sally Bowles. Now according to the New York Times, Stone has pulled out of the upcoming show. Stone’s publicist told NYT that she “has scheduling conflicts with a feature film that prevent her from joining the musical.”
Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall will co-direct the production, which will open at Studio 54 next spring. A Roundabout spokesperson told NYT: “Roundabout is in the casting phase and exploring if the production can come together with the most ideal cast.”
Earlier this spring, BWW reported that Anne Hathaway was under consideration for the iconic role however her publicist promptly denied the report to the New York Times. However it was confirmed by Cabaret composer John Kander that the Roundabout Theater Company, which revived the musical back in 1998, is planning to bring the show back to Studio 54 in early 2014. Alan Cumming is attached to reprise his role as the Emcee with rehearsals scheduled to get underway in January 2014.
Stone most recently appeared on the big screen in “Gangster Squad” and lent her voice to DreamWorks hit animated film “The Croods.” Next summer she will reprise her role as Gwen Stacy in the second installment of “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
If a certain set of spoiler-heavy set photos didn’t have you worried about Gwen Stacy’s fate in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, then new comments from the film’s leading lady should do the job.
Emma Stone recently spoke with SFX about returning to the role of Gwen for the currently shooting sequel, and she made it clear she wants to stay faithful to the character’s tragic comic book history.
“Essentially the argument is that Spider-Man kills her by accident,” she said, referring to whiplash Gwen suffers when Spidey catches her during a fall from a bridge. “So the person she loves is the person who kills her, which is the most horrifying thing.”
She continued, “Apparently people unsubscribed to the comic book when that happened because they were just so flipped-out over it. But, of course, I want to stay true to that.”
Those comments, combined with the aforementioned set photos and an earlier report that Sony is building to the “Death of Gwen Stacy” story arc, are more than enough reasons for Peter-Gwen shippers to start sweating web fluid.
Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also stars Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti and Sally Field. It opens May 2, 2014.
Emma Stone attended the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation’s 6th Annual Peace, Love and a Cure cocktail reception in New Jersey on Tuesday with her mother, Krista, and her brother, Spencer, by her side. The event was personal for the Stone family, as Emma’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 at the age of 48. The starlet honored her mother at the benefit, presenting her with an award, and sharing a few touching words with the crowd. During the event, “The Spider-Man” actress revealed that she felt overwhelmed when she learned of her mother’s diagnosis saying, “I was oddly stoic, the opposite of how I usually am. But it was terrifying.” Her mother chimed in and said, “”I’m sure, in private, Em lived in fear and anxiety. But she really shifted into this [mode of] ‘We’re going to take care of this, and everything’s going to be fine.’”
At the time of her mother’s diagnosis, Emma was only 19 years old and living alone in Los Angeles. Her career was just beginning to take off. But her mom was her main priority, and she flew back to Arizona often to be with her during her treatments, which included a double mastectomy and a year-and-a-half of chemo.
Now, Krista is 5 years cancer-free, and her A-lister daughter is taking every opportunity to spread awareness about the deadly disease. But the mother and daughter duo aren’t looking back! They even found a fun way to commemorate her conquering the disease.
